Main Collection/Circulating Books

The library maintains a collection of books on the topics of interior design & decoration, architecture, decorative & fine arts, landscape design and other related fields. Most of the library’s books are part of the circulating collection, and can be checked out for 28 days by NYSID students and faculty. For our full policies on book check out see: http://nysidlibrary.org/policies/

Library Use Only

Reference books include encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, time-saver standards, bibliographies, text books and building-type basics, and can be quickly consulted for information. Reference books are shelved with the circulating collection, but are Library Use Only and cannot be checked out.

Study Collections

Behind the periodicals are study collections for selected courses or topics. These include Historical Styles’ tracing project, Color for Interiors, books with house plans for Design Process, Codes books, the thesis collection, and Time-Savers Standards. Because these books are in high demand, they are Library Use Only and cannot be checked out.

Thesis Preparation Books Collection

The library houses books created by MFA 2 students during their thesis preparation semester. These are available for two-hour check out by NYSID students.

Magazines & Journals

The library has over 150 magazine and journals, including current subscriptions and past issues. The past six months of most titles are on display, and all issues from 2005 to the present are available for browsing in the library stacks. Please request all issues prior to 2005 at the information desk using the periodical name, date, issue and volume number. Periodicals may not be taken out of the library.

Auction Catalogues

The library holds selected catalogues from auctions of furniture and decorative arts. These are arranged in order by country (e.g. an auction for Americana would be in the American section). Auction Catalogues are stored at the entrance to the Atelier and they should not leave the building.

DVDs/CDs

DVDs and CDs that provide additional information for books, documentaries and films are stored at the information desk and may be checked out of the library for one week by NYSID faculty and students only. Audiovisual materials may not be renewed. Non-circulating DVD/Videos may only be viewed in the library. All AV materials have fines of $1 per day if returned late.

Rare Book Collection

Books are placed in the Rare Book Collection because they are fragile, valuable or uniquely important. Patrons are welcome to view and photograph any rare materials, but photocopying, scanning, or tracing are not permitted. Rare materials may be requested at the circulation desk by presenting your school ID.
